Ahhh “Lampan”, the little IKEA lamp found in thousands of rentals and student digs all across the globe. I loved this cheeky little number when I bought it but time is a cruel mistress and three years on I’m just plain tired of it. Despite only costing €4 there is no way I could just toss it. (*shudders*). You’re about the meet the all time easiest IKEA hack.
As with nearly all my attempts at craft and DIY the end result is dependent on what I already have lying about the house. A quick scout around produced a gold art deco melamine plate from Tesco (bought for €2 ages ago) and my new favourite toy: Gold Metallic Rust-o-leum.
Ohhh the excitement!
“Lampan’s” fate was clear..it’s next life was going to be as a gold cake stand.
I think it took me all of 10 minutes (not including drying time) and is THE easiest hack on earth!
Here’s how to do it:
You will need: scissors, a small flat head screw driver, a glue gun and of course the lamp, plate and paint of your choosing.
Step one: remove the shade and the light bulb and cut the flex as short as you can (obviously don’t have it plugged in!) – there is no way to separate the two parts that form the base, trust me, I tried..that sucker is glued together like no tomorrow.
Step two: using a small screw driver, remove the white plastic bit that’s sticking up by simply prying apart the fixing at the join on either side (it pops right off). Trust me this is way easier than it sounds, you just can’t see the join in the picture.
(Removing the white bit that sticks up gives you a flush base for your plate to sit on).
Step three: Spray your base and when dry, just glue on your plate. I only did one coat, mainly because I’m so impatient, so it was dry pretty quick.
Et voilà! Instant cake stand.
I realised while the cake stand was drying that I hadn’t done anything with the shade and the only thing better than cake… is cake with champagne..
It look longer to make the cake than it did to make the stand, the ice bucket AND the flags!
(I kid you not). Admittedly I’m a horrible cook but you get the picture. Anyhoo hope you like it.
Happy hacking kids!!
